Benchmark Survey for Sustainability

Introduction and Purpose

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting is similar in concept to environmental, health, and safety (EHS) reporting, but has a broadened emphasis on social matters such as ethical labor practices, training, education and diversity of work force and corporate philanthropic initiatives. CSR and sustainability are interchangeable terms which are being used on a global basis, especially by multi-national firms. There is considerable pressure on companies from its stockholders, outside stakeholders, consumers, and other groups to demonstrate tangible benefits to the triple bottom line: economic value and environmental and social impacts.

Toward the end of the 1990's, EHS Managers began using EHS Management Information Solutions (EMIS) to streamline their EHS data collection, manipulation and reporting to save valuable time and money. Currently, there is an evolution where EHS Managers want to expand the use of their EMIS to capture sustainability metrics. Some CSR Managers are even integrating their EMIS with new tools - Corporate Sustainability Management Information Solutions (CMIS).

Many EHS and CSR professionals are asking questions such as, "Are my peers using their EMIS for sustainability reporting and tracking?" and "Are the EMIS software tools sufficiently advanced or flexible to allow management of sustainability metrics?" and "Are my peers using any CMIS tools?"

Environmental Data Solutions Group (EDSG) is conducting this cross-industry survey to benchmark current practices for managing corporate sustainability data. The survey results will be published by the Air and Waste Management Association's (AWMA) later this year.

All EHS and CSR professionals who participate in this survey will be provided with a free copy of the survey results. All responses will be kept confidential. The AWMA article will describe trends and statistics for how sustainability data is being managed by industry.
